âI canât do this,â I said yet again as I opened my locker after first period. Second period was math with Shad. I really didn't think that I could endure it. I closed my locker and banged my head against it. âI am going to go back outside to the grass.â
âEmma, we have been over this. It isn't really Shad. Don't take anything he says or does seriously. And I think we need to not ever lay down over in the grass again. People were giving us looks, and while I love you, and all, we donât need that extra attention from the earthlings. Okay, maybe from one Earthling, Aiden, but I really would like him not to think that I am crazy. Also, I had some grass in my hair,â she whispered that last part.
âEasier said than done, for me, at least. I am going crazy,â I mumbled.
Ash put her hands on her hips. âWhat is?â
âEasier said than done, to not take what Shad says seriously. Itâs not easy, and hearing Cade inside of me is driving me crazy.â
âTry, and I don't know, to get to know the new him. Think of him as someone brand new, and get to know him again,â she shrugged.
âThat might be okay, I guess, if he wasn't a psycho, murderer stalker.â I moved my head from my locker as a chill ran down my spine.
âI didn't mean Cade, I meant Shad,â Ash clarified with a laugh. âOf course, you want to stay as far away from Cade as you can.â
I turned around to see Cade behind me, leaning against a pillar with a smug look on his face. What was the saying? Speak of the devil? I quickly focused on my melody, shielding it as best I could. I wasnât very good at it, but letting the monster of corruption inside me have its moment, chased away my melody faster than a wildfire could engulf an entire dried out forest.
âSweetheart, I have been looking for you everywhere,â Cade crooned as I turned away from him and gave wide eyes to Ash. She looked from Cade to me and smiled. It was like she didnât know that the devil was standing there behind meâor wait, the corruptor himself. âWhy are you shielding your soul?â he asked. I turned back around as Ash whispered in my ear.
âHe looks so much like Shad, Emma, and that melodyââ She bit her lip. âI think you should cut yourself some slack for being confused.â I started pulling her down the hall and away from the evil boy.
âAsh, don't look at him. He's conceited.â
âI mean he hasââ
I looked at her with warning in my eyes. âDon't you say it.â
âWhat?â She shook her head and pretended to zip her lips. âI wasn't going to say a word.â
I rolled my eyes at her, and she laughed. I knew Cade was attractive, how could a person be related to Shad and not be? Shad was perfect.
âEmma!â Cade called,
I didnât answer, and because
